Dear Mr. Norris:
I just wanted to write and tell you how much I admire you
and what you stand for. Your show has covered a great many
areas of concern that this country is faced with (racism,
drugs in our culture, gangs, etc...) You have done a wonderful
job in bringing these issues to the surface and getting communities
to work together and deal with these problems. Congradulations
on a job well done!!!
I personally have followed your career ever since I saw you
on a TV show called "Kids are People Too." Now, many years later
I am twenty-eight years old and probably have every movie you stared in.
I must admit, you have one hell of a spin heal kick, side kick,
and jump spinning heal kick. They really look good!!! Every
evening at 8:00pm during the week and at 10:00pm my wife
and I are sitting in our living room watching "Walker, Texas
Ranger." It's about the only show on TV we will watch.
I recently just received an honorable discharge from the Navy
with campaign medals from Desert Storm, Somalia, and Bosnia
(was in Haiti, but congress didn't approve any citations
for that campaign). In addition, I have completed two degrees from a university
here in Maryland with honors just last December and I am currently
working on my first black belt in Hapkido. I have really enjoyed
studying martial arts and am looking forward to reading your book.
If you ever get a change during your busy schedule can you please
drop a letter in the mail. My wife and I would really enjoy reading
a letter from someone who really is making a difference in this world.

I grew up on a diet of Chuck 'N' Bruce Lee films - 'Good Guys wear Black', 'Octagon' and all those other cinematic gems. And of course let us not forget 'The way of the Dragon'. Everybody knows that Chuck could have easily taken out Lee. Sure, Bruce's image will quadruple the sales of any Martial Arts magazine. But we all know who was the better fighter.
Forget about Stallone, Schwarzenegger, Dolph Lundgren and all those other losers. For Dolph and Sly it's just acting, but for Chuck it's for real. I mean he were there, he were at Vietnam! Dostoyevski's Notes from the Underground points out that the choice is either ' to be a hero or to grovel in the mud' - there is nothing in between. You've gotta be a hard-nosed b@!%$*d to get anywhere in this world, and for Chuck, loosing has never been an option.
But what I want to know is the significance of the kitten in Way of the Dragon. That clever little sequence intercut with the final fight scene. Is the kitten a manifestation of the dichotomy that exists between occidental culture and ancient mysticism? Loss of spiritual union in Western society has left a void that we try to fill in whatever way we can. The primary culture in America is consumerism; Capitalism is not a system, it is a way of life. We are led to expect gratification and it never happens. We are dying of thirst and the buckets all have holes. The cat in Way of the Dragon personifies perfectly the fusion of two opposing beliefs. Movement towards mysticism in the West and the overlyhasty modernization of the orient. The cat is the embodiment of 20th Century culture.
I like cats! Intelligent, stealth-like and powerful movements clash with sensitive, warm and loving behavior. Cats are a living, breathing mixed-bag of contradictions. Fast, tending towards violence one moment, slow and languid the next. You sense the slow dark clouds of hostility lurking within a cat's moody presence. I think that's the problem with the public's perception of Chuck. That see him more a lover than a fighter. They see him move languidly, they see his easy smile - they see a big, amiable cat with his saucer of milk rather than a tiger on the prowl. I have a lot of respect for Chuck, and cats too. Always be very wary of a cat. Cats sleep anywhere, but there sleep is sacrosanct. The prophet Mohammed cut his cloak in two, rather than disturb his cat which slept peacefully upon it!

I had the distinct pleasure of meeting Him and His Brother Arron at
the opening of the Virgina Beach School in the seventies. I made a
photo album and sent it thru Mr. Myron D. Emory to Chuck, he wrote
me a thank you letter before he left overseas for a soccer game. My Martial Art Career has somewhat waned, but I still train at least
montly, and I owe my quest for that training to Mr. Norris.
